Awards Ceremony

Remarks and Awards
Lana Garland, Creative Director, Director, and Writer/Producer

Durham's Lana Garland is presenting awards at Longleaf Film Festival 2022.Lana has worked as a creative director, a director, and a writer/producer, creating content for such networks as BET, ESPN, and Denmark’s TV2. In documentary film, she has worked on Bowling for Columbine with director Michael Moore, Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool (Independent Television Service and PBS), and Unchained Memories: Readings from the Slave Narratives (HBO) with actors Samuel L. Jackson, Oprah Winfrey, Don Cheadle, and more. In the realm of short film, her works include Rapture and AfterLife, as well as her ongoing Reservoir Documentary Series, which collects stories of Black people surviving and overcoming different types of trauma. Lana has received the Ella Fountain Pratt Emerging Artists Award and a filmmaking grant from the Southern Documentary Fund for a project on African American washerwomen; in addition, she is a Fulbright Specialist, having taught film at Makerere University in Uganda. Her company, Insibah Media, is based in Durham and creates documentaries, web series, and marketing videos for the Internet and for broadcast and cable TV.

Lana is also a longtime supporter of Longleaf Film Festival, having shared her talents and expertise in a variety of workshop sessions.

    One prize may be awarded in the following subcategory:

    One prize may be awarded in the following subcategory:

    • Best Overall
  • All documentary festival submissions are also eligible for a $500 Judges’ Choice/Documentary Film award.
  • Documentary Short
    One prize may be awarded in the following subcategory:

    • Best Overall
  • All documentary festival submissions are also eligible for a $500 Judges’ Choice/Documentary Film award.
  • History+ Film
    Entries must reflect or depict a topic in history from a unique perspective or insight and must be accurately interpreted or portrayed. One prize may be awarded for each of the following subcategories:

    • Best Narrative
    • Best Documentary
  • Middle and High School Student Film
    Films must have been primarily written, filmed, and produced by students currently enrolled in middle and/or high school or students who graduated from high school at the end of the past academic year. One prize may be awarded for each of the following subcategories:

    • Best Narrative
    • Best Documentary
  • All films entered in the Middle and High School Student Film category are also eligible for a $250 Best Student Film award.
  • Music Video
    One prize may be awarded in the following subcategory:

    • Best Overall
  • Spoken Word Production
    One prize may be awarded in the following subcategory:

    • Best Overall
  • Web Series
    One prize may be awarded in the following subcategory:

    • Best Web Series
    • Best Web Pilot
  • Celebration and Community Productions
    For 2022, we are excited to announce three new awards that support the creative works of filmmakers from historically underrepresented communities; one $250 prize may be awarded to the best production in each category:

    • American Indian Heritage Celebration Prize
    • African American Cultural Celebration Prize
    • Latin American Communities Prize
  • Movie Poster
    One prize may be awarded based on popular vote from festival attendees!

    • Best Overall
  • Narrative Feature
    One prize may be awarded for each of the following subcategories:

    • Best Horror–Sci-Fi
    • Best Comedy
    • Best Drama
  • All narrative festival submissions are also eligible for a $500 Judges’ Choice/Narrative Film award.

NOW, let’s regroup down the road for our annual free-to-attend Wrap Party:

Longleaf Film Festival Wrap Party
After the awards ceremony, meet us a few blocks south at the Big Easy (222 Fayetteville Street; upstairs and back to the Voodoo Room event space) for our annual Wrap Party for all friends, family members, and other supporters of filmmakers and Longleaf.  Longleaf will provide some munchies; you buy your favorite beverageDonations are encouraged as expressions of your appreciation.  All contributions at the annual Wrap Party help offset expenses for this year’s festival and help us get ready to make next year’s event even better.

Our Wrap Party is  free to attend  and open to anyone who attended Longleaf on Friday or Saturday, but occupancy is limited.  For information, call 919-814-7028.
