A free-to-attend festival that highlights the best of independent film in a place that strives to tell the stories that connect us all—this is Longleaf. Our weekend festival screens films that demonstrate a Tar Heel State connection, through the people involved in making them or through their subject. The North Carolina Museum of History serves as home base for Longleaf Film Festival. Entering year eight in 2022, Longleaf continues to grow, even though, due to COVID-19, Longleaf 2020 and Longleaf 2021 pivoted to a virtual presence, supported with a series of online and live-streamed events. For both years, through our community of filmmakers and film fans, we were able to promote the art and craft of filmmaking and the passion of film to viewers in Raleigh, the Triangle, and beyond.

A 2021 Recap

Longleaf 2021 actually began in October 2020, with a moving and insightful virtual program, FilmExchange, that spoke to conversations on race and community, as well as the art and artistry of the Black experience in North Carolina—and beyond. Our thanks to former Longleaf Official Selection filmmakers who shared their work and insights during that enlightening program.

Our 2021 virtual festival continued on April 30 with announcement of this year’s award-winning films in a live-stream program. Then, over our festival dates of May 14 and 15, we presented—thanks to the generosity of those filmmakers—dozens of our Official Selection films for free online viewing: a total of 59 films, including 17 premieres. In addition, on Saturday, Longleaf hosted two virtual workshops and a live Q&A session with many Longleaf filmmakers! In all, these virtual programs—a morning panel, Black Lives in the Carolinas, 1938–1978; an afternoon workshop, Legal Basics for Indie Filmmakers; and a live Zoom Q&A session in the evening—were watched, attended, or viewed by 675 people over the weekend. (Take a look: we recorded most sessions!)

Some other impressive statistics: Over the festival’s two days, the Longleaf website garnered about 2,500 individual hits, from folks across the US and in 14 other countries! And, social media traffic during the time around the festival was strong, as well, with 14,425 people reached via Facebook; 902 profile visits and 32,000 impressions on Twitter; and a reach of about 1,000 on Instagram, with 1,200 interactions.

A Welcoming Festival—Free Submissions (again) in 2022 and New Prizes

Throughout our short history, we have been grateful for the impactful stories regarding race and community that have been told in past festivals. We strongly believe that the art and craft of filmmaking help connect us and offer avenues for insight, as well as entertainment. We want to share everyone’s stories: animated, documentary, and narrative films, music videos, spoken word productions, and web series. To help in our small way, we will continue to make access to Longleaf easier for 2022 by waiving submission fees for directors who identify as Black, Latinx, or Indigenous. We can make this gesture because of help from many caring folks. Their support also means that, for 2022, Longleaf is offering recognition to the best films made by historically underrepresented filmmakers with three new prizes.

Looking Forward, Again

Longleaf Film Festival 2022 will be held Friday, May 13, and Saturday, May 14; it is our sincerest hope that the event will be in-person at our home base, the North Carolina Museum of History in downtown Raleigh. With your help and support, we plan to help keep Longleaf THE capital city’s film festival. As a free-to-attend event, sponsorships help make Longleaf happen and can also work to make everyone feel welcome to this community—where we recognize that making films is making history.

2022 Sponsor Levels and Benefits

While we are planning that Longleaf 2022 will be an in-person event at our home base, the North Carolina Museum of History, we now have experience with successful virtual festivals, as well, if the need arises. Sponsorship perks include in-person and virtual benefits. We will be in touch closer to our festival dates if we are required to transition to an online event.
